While there are many tips for eating healthy with braces (don’t forget about flossing!), you may be wondering what foods need to be modified as a result of orthodontic treatment. Many fruits and vegetables can help clean food particles out from between your teeth, so it’s important not to eliminate these from your diet during treatment. Below are some foods that can actually help keep your mouth clean during treatment


To Protect Braces From Damage

Don’t eat sticky foods like gummy candy, fruit-flavored lollipops or jelly beans. Avoid crispy foods like corn chips, popcorn and crackers because they can scratch and damage your braces. Don’t chew on ice cubes or suck on hard candies (especially bubble gum). These may not seem like major food groups to you, but you’ll be surprised how many of these food items you had to say goodbye to when your braces went on. To protect your teeth from acid damage, avoid acidic fruits (such as oranges) for at least one hour after brushing your teeth and eating a meal. If you do consume citrus fruits, make sure to drink lots of water afterward.
